BlackBerry Revamps IoT Division to QNX for SDV

In a strategic move to reinforce its position at the forefront of automotive and embedded technology, BlackBerry Limited announced today the renaming of its IoT division to QNX and the relaunch of the storied brand. The revitalization comes as BlackBerry aims to amplify recognition and leverage QNX’s legacy as a cornerstone of next-generation software-defined vehicles and mission-critical systems.

The rebranding, shaped by feedback from customers, partners, and stakeholders, signals a pivotal moment for the division. “Relaunching the QNX brand is an important step in BlackBerry’s broader strategy to increase our visibility and fortify our leadership,” said John J. Giamatteo, BlackBerry CEO. “This brand honors QNX’s strong history while setting the stage to drive smarter, safer, and faster innovation.”

A Foundation for Software-Defined Vehicles

With nearly 45 years of embedded software expertise, QNX technology powers more than 255 million vehicles and a myriad of critical systems, from medical devices to industrial controls. Its robust software enables automakers and industrial leaders to unlock new revenue streams while maintaining safety, security, and reliability.

Mattias Eriksson, President of QNX, underscored the division’s readiness for the future. “As demand for advanced hybrid cloud and edge computing grows, QNX is positioned to capitalize on these trends. Our investments and partnerships over the past three years have set us up for long-term innovation,” Eriksson said.

A New Era for QNX

The relaunch includes a refreshed visual identity featuring a modernized logo, a new website, and a tagline, “It all starts here,” reflecting QNX’s role as the foundation of critical software-defined systems. The company will debut its revamped identity at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, where it will showcase its complete suite of automotive solutions.

Decades of Innovation

QNX traces its roots to 1980, when two University of Waterloo graduates launched Quantum Software Systems and created the QNX operating system. Over the decades, the system evolved from powering industrial machinery to becoming a leader in real-time operating systems for automotive and IoT applications.

In its most recent milestone, QNX launched its Software Development Platform (SDP) 8.0—its most significant update in over a decade—designed to support scalable, next-generation systems. The division also introduced QNX Sound, a platform for audio innovation, and QNX Everywhere, an initiative promoting open development for QNX technologies.

Looking Ahead

The revitalized QNX brand marks a new chapter for BlackBerry as it sharpens its focus on software-defined solutions for a rapidly evolving automotive and embedded systems market. As the industry embraces the future of mobility, QNX is poised to remain a critical driver of innovation and excellence.
