Carlos Tavares, the architect of Stellantis N.V.’s formation and its Chief Executive Officer since the company’s inception, has stepped down from his role, the automotive giant announced today. The decision, accepted by the Board of Directors under Chairman John Elkann, is effective immediately, following a divergence in strategic views between Tavares and the Board.
“Stellantis’ success since its creation has been rooted in a perfect alignment between the reference shareholders, the Board, and the CEO,” said Henri de Castries, Stellantis’ Senior Independent Director. “However, in recent weeks, different views have emerged, which have resulted in the Board and the CEO coming to today’s decision.”
Interim Leadership Takes the Helm
To steer the company during the transition, Stellantis has established an Interim Executive Committee (IEC) chaired by Elkann. The IEC will assume leadership responsibilities while the process to appoint a permanent CEO, already underway, is expected to conclude by mid-2025.
The committee, composed of senior executives representing diverse functions and regions, reflects Stellantis’ expansive global footprint. Key members of the IEC include:
- Xavier Chéreau: Human Resources and Heritage
- Ned Curic: Engineering and Technology, Software, and Free2move
- Arnaud Deboeuf: Manufacturing and Supply Chain
- Antonio Filosa: Americas and North American brands
- Béatrice Foucher: Planning
- Jean-Philippe Imparato: Enlarged Europe and European brands
- Douglas Ostermann: Finance
- Maxime Picat: Purchasing and Asia-Pacific regions
- Philippe de Rovira: Affiliates
Supporting this team are a set of Executive Vice Presidents and advisors reporting directly to Elkann, including Richard Palmer as Special Adviser to the Chairman.
Reaffirming Strategic Goals
Despite the leadership changes, Stellantis remains steadfast in its operational and financial objectives. The company confirmed its full-year 2024 guidance, issued on October 31, highlighting confidence in its strategic direction and market performance.
“Thanks go to Carlos for his years of dedicated service,” said Elkann, emphasizing Tavares’ critical role in Stellantis’ creation and its rise as a global automotive powerhouse. “I look forward to working with our Interim Executive Committee and all Stellantis colleagues to ensure the continued deployment of our long-term strategy.”
A Legacy of Transformation
Tavares, who previously led turnarounds at PSA Group and Opel, played a pivotal role in the 2021 merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group that birthed Stellantis. Under his leadership, the company expanded its global reach and invested heavily in electrification and technology.
