Emission Free Mission Accomplished for Mercedes EV Popemobile

Mercedes-Benz is making history with the first fully electric Popemobile, set to debut in time for the Vatican’s 2025 Jubilee, a once-every-25-years event expected to draw millions of pilgrims to Rome. For 94 years, Mercedes has supplied cars to the Vatican, but this marks the beginning of an emissions-free era for the pontiff’s iconic ride.

The bespoke EV, based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, has been custom-designed in collaboration with the Vatican to meet the unique needs of Pope Francis. It features an electric drivetrain optimized for the low speeds required during public appearances, aligning with the Pope’s vision of sustainability outlined in his encyclical, Laudato Si.

“With this Popemobile, we are sending a clear message about electromobility and decarbonization,” said Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-Benz Group AG. “It’s an honor to contribute to such a historic milestone.”

A Global Collaboration for a Unique Mission

The electric Popemobile is the product of a year-long effort by specialists from Graz, Austria, Sindelfingen, Germany, and Rome, Italy. Teams from Design, Research & Development, and Manufacturing worked closely to craft a vehicle that meets the Pope’s exacting standards.

Highlights of the project include:

  • Bodywork and Interior: Handcrafted in Sindelfingen, featuring traditional techniques and bespoke materials.
  • Electric Drivetrain: Adapted in Graz to ensure smooth operation at the low speeds typical of papal events.
  • Custom Features: Designed to blend functionality with comfort and ceremonial significance.

In a touching ceremony outside St. Peter’s Basilica, Mercedes-Benz employees from the project team had the rare honor of presenting the vehicle to Pope Francis and attending a private audience with him.

Symbol of a Carbon-Free Future

The electric Popemobile is more than a one-off creation; it’s a statement of intent from Mercedes-Benz. The company aims for a net-carbon-neutral fleet by 2039, and this collaboration with the Vatican underscores its commitment to sustainable innovation.

Pope Francis will now travel emission-free, setting an example for millions of pilgrims while highlighting the transformative potential of green technology. The electric Popemobile is a historic step forward—both for the Vatican and the automotive world.
