Rivian took a major step toward inclusive EV infrastructure with its first next-generation Rivian Adventure Network charging site in Joshua Tree, California. Designed to serve all electric vehicles, not just the company’s own R1T pickups and R1S SUVs, these chargers reflect Rivian’s commitment to expanding access to EV charging while advancing the electrification of the transportation sector.
Strategically placed in scenic and high-traffic locations, the chargers deliver rapid charging up to 900 volts and feature CCS connectors. A future hardware update will add support for native NACS connectors, ensuring compatibility with the evolving North American Charging Standard. In the interim, NACS-equipped vehicles with approved adapters can charge seamlessly.
“Since the beginning, we’ve understood that creating great products like the R1T and R1S only made up half the equation,” Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said. “To achieve widespread electrification, you also need a really good charging network. Now, we’re excited to bring the Rivian Adventure Network—with its ease of use and exceptional reliability—to other EV drivers around North America.”
The Joshua Tree Charging Outpost is the first of several planned locations this year, with sites in Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York set to follow. Each charging station includes features such as tap-to-pay and a larger display for ease of use, while Rivian owners will retain their signature seamless authentication experience through the company’s mobile app.
Rivian’s design also positions the network for federal and state funding eligibility, enhancing its scalability. Notably, the network is powered by 100% renewable energy, allowing EV drivers to actively contribute to decarbonizing the grid—a crucial element in achieving a sustainable, emissions-free future.
With its inclusive approach and renewable focus, Rivian aims to redefine road trip charging, making it simple, sustainable, and universally accessible.
