There were several announcements today at ACT Expo Las Vegas from Volvo Autonomous, Autel,

Volvo Production Truck Ready for Autonomous Driving

Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S.) today unveiled Volvo’s first-ever production ready autonomous truck at the ACT Expo in Las Vegas. The Volvo VNL Autonomous brings together Volvo’s commercial vehicle expertise with industry-leading autonomous driving technology from Aurora Innovation (NASDAQ: AUR). The result is a purpose-designed and purpose-built autonomous truck that will be the key enabler to increasing freight capacity across the United States.

Cutting-edge Technology and Purpose-built for Integration

Volvo’s and Aurora’s world-class engineering teams have worked closely together to integrate the Volvo VNL Autonomous and the Aurora Driver, an SAE L4 autonomous driving system. The Aurora Driver consists of powerful AI software, dual computers, proprietary lidar that can detect objects more than 400 meters away, high-resolution cameras, imaging radar, and additional sensors, enabling the Volvo VNL Autonomous to safely navigate the world around it.

The Aurora Driver has been extensively trained and tested in Aurora’s sophisticated virtual suite where it’s driven billions of miles. Purpose-built for Commercial Scale

Building a viable autonomous truck at scale requires extensive manufacturing experience and a proven procurement eco-system. The Volvo VNL Autonomous will be assembled at Volvo’s flagship New River Valley (NRV) plant in Dublin, Virginia. As the largest Volvo Trucks plant in the world, NRV’s decades of high-volume production experience combined with stringent automotive quality processes will result in the capability to produce the Volvo VNL Autonomous at industry demand.

BAE Systems & Eaton Drive System Tested

BAE Systems, a leader in electric propulsion, and Eaton, a global power management company, successfully tested their integrated electric drive system for medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks. Using this technology, existing truck models can be easily adapted across various zero-emission applications, improving efficiency, performance, and flexibility.

Testing occurred at Eaton’s proving grounds in Marshall, Michigan on a Class 7 demonstration vehicle. The vehicle met key on-road performance goals, including gradeability and highway speed, all within a single electric vehicle (EV) system. The compact system helps increase electrical efficiency and reduce vehicle weight.

BAE Systems’ electric motor and suite of modular power electronics is combined with Eaton’s MD 4-speed EV transmission to create a comprehensive system for commercial vehicles. It can also be fitted with Eaton’s HD-4 EV transmission, offering a full line of electric drive systems for commercial trucks above 19 tons.

The BAE Systems and Eaton system gives original equipment manufacturers a durable and optimized electric drive solution for a wide range of platforms. Due to unique architecture, it uses a reduced number of components, cables, and connections, saving space and weight on the vehicle. Tern to Distribute Hino Zero Emission Truck

Today at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo, Hino Trucks proudly announced they are the exclusive distributor for Tern, a dedicated zero-emission truck brand along with their inaugural truck model, the RC8, a groundbreaking battery electric Class 8 tractor tailored for the U.S. market.

The Tern RC8 is built on Hino’s proven XL Series 4×2 chassis and integrates Hexagon Purus’ cutting-edge zero-emission technology. The RC8 boasts innovative features including proprietary battery systems, auxiliary modules, and power modules. The vehicle leverages a U.S.-assembled Hino chassis, Dana’s Zero-8 e-Axle for optimum efficiency, and battery cells supplied and manufactured by Panasonic Energy initially in Japan, before transitioning to De Soto, Kansas from 2026 onwards, ensuring reliability, American sourcing and top-tier performance.

Tern trucks will be exclusively available through select qualifying dealers comprising the Tern dealer network, leveraging Hino Trucks’ infrastructure ensuring total support. Serial production for the Tern RC8 is scheduled for late 2024.

This launch aligns with California’s Advanced Clean Fleets regulation, offering fleets a compelling option to decarbonize their fleet, particularly in target applications like metro-regional routes, food & beverage logistics and similar routes where the tight turning radius and popular 4×2 chassis provide practical benefits.

Witricity Pilot Port of Long Beach

WiTricity, the leader in wireless electric vehicle charging, and International Transportation Service LLC (ITS) are launching a first-of-its-kind pilot program at the Port of Long Beach.

The six-month program will test the effectiveness and efficiency of WiTricity’s patented wireless charging technology in real-world conditions.

This initiative will allow ITS to assess the effect of wireless charging on operational costs  as it electrifies its light-duty fleet. It also highlights two significant firsts: the first wirelessly charged Ford E-Transit using WiTricity technology, and the first collaboration between WiTricity and ITS showcasing WiTricity’s Halo™ wireless EV charging system in a practical fleet setting.

WiTricity’s wireless chargers will power a portion of ITS’s light-duty fleet, which is used for transporting staff and visitors around the busy terminal. The data collected will guide  ITS as it moves forward with plans to fully electrify its light-duty fleet.

WiTricity’s technology allows EVs to be charged simply by parking over a charging pad, offering the same speed and efficiency as a standard Level 2 plug but with enhanced convenience, reliability, and safety.

AFVi New Hydrogen Training

Alternative Fuel Vehicle Institute (AFVi) is thrilled to announce its new hydrogen training course at ACT Expo. “Level 1: Hydrogen Vehicle Essentials and Safety Practices” focuses on safety requirements, procedures, and best practices for vehicle technicians who work on or around hydrogen fuel systems that power both fuel cells and engines.

“We’ve been asked before — several times, in fact — by some of our current customers about whether we offer hydrogen training, or would ever offer it,” noted Annalloyd Thomason, AFVi’s chief executive officer. “While we’ve known the demand has been there, we wanted to make sure that kind of training could meet the same stringent requirements that we’ve always held for our natural gas vehicle courses. We’re very happy to report that is now the case.”

Hydrogen remains a powerful contender in the alternative fuels industry, and AFVi has dedicated itself to sharing the knowledge and skills with fleet managers and their technicians on how to safely maintain these vehicles.

While attendees at ACT Expo were given an exclusive sneak peek into this new training, Thomason was quick to point out that its information is shared on her company’s website. It’s also available in three delivery modes: live in-person, live online, and on-demand e-learning. The initial live-online course is scheduled for June 13 and currently open for registration.

“Don’t think that this is all there is to hydrogen training,” Thomason added. “Level 2 training for hydrogen fuel system inspectors is currently in development, as well as a certification program for technicians who want to pursue that path. We have a lot more coming.”

XCharge Charging for Kaptyn

Today, XCharge North America (NA), a leading DC high-power and battery-integrated electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions provider, announced their partnership with Kaptyn, a luxury private driver service. This collaboration will enhance Kaptyn’s EV charging at their Las Vegas flagship facility, replacing 10 of Kaptyn’s current Level 2 EV charging stations with XCharge NA’s direct current fast charging (DCFC) equipment. These chargers offer Kaptyn shorter charging times for vehicles and increased turnover.

Kaptyn operates 100 EVs throughout the United States and has a fleet of 55 EVs, mainly comprised of Tesla vehicles in the Las Vegas market. Their Las Vegas fleet was relying on level two chargers and frequently outsources to Tesla’s Super Charging Network, which is already inundated with competing car businesses and Tesla owners. Kaptyn needed to secure increased electricity to help power their facility, leading them to adopt XCharge NA’s charger technology. With XCharge NA, Kaptyn can bolster their EV charging infrastructure within their current power capacity to service their electrified fleet.

Coulomb AAM

Coulomb Solutions Inc. (CSI), unveiled its new fully integrated Advanced Accessory Module (AAM) for commercial electric vehicles today at North America’s largest Advanced Commercial Vehicle Technology Conference (ACT EXPO), in Las Vegas, NV. This single integrated unit is a breakthrough for commercial vehicle OEM’s. CSI’s Advanced Accessory Module (AAM) is compact and incorporates all EV advanced accessory electronics including the high-voltage power distribution unit (PDU+), battery thermal management brake air compressor, the 3-4kW electric steering pump, 3kW cabin compressor, 12kW cabin heater, water pumps and one or two 20kW AC chargers. CSI’s AAM brings multiple benefits to OEM customers. Paired with an electric axle and battery system, CSI’s pre-packaged solution offers all the components and software to launch a new electric vehicle platform.

At less than 40 inches long and 32 inches in height, CSI’s Advanced Accessory Module (AAM) fits under most standard truck and bus hoods. It incorporates CSI’s newest PDU+ highly integrated electronics module with 4 battery string inputs, and a DC fast charge and AC charge input. The CSI AAM also has a multitude of outputs including two 250kW drive inverter outputs, 2 accessory drive outputs for steering and braking, a 2.5 kW 12V DCDC converter, and four 600VDC outputs for an AC compressor, heater, PTO, and other accessories. The AAM saves more than 50% of the high-voltage cabling, low voltage and communication wiring, and cooling plumbing in traditional commercial EV integrations. ZM Trucks Debut

– North America’s newest zero-emissions commercial truck brand, ZM Trucks, will make its debut at the upcoming Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Las Vegas May 20-23. As the western expression of ZO Motors, ZM Trucks will present five models in the Class 4, 5, 6 and “baby8” segments, expected to be on sale before the end of 2024. Each ZM Trucks model is optimized for local market needs and will be assembled in North America and compliant with all North American regulations, using market-proven platforms that have accumulated millions of real-world driving miles, resulting in purpose-built, zero-emission work trucks, offering total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) advantages versus traditional diesel trucks.
