ID.4 EV Drone Command Concept
Volkswagen of America is collaborating with the Tennessee Valley Authority as the utility corporation sets a goal of operating a 100 percent electric sedan and SUV fleet by the year 2030. As one of its early steps, the utility provider has chosen to collaborate with Volkswagen on a year-long test using its ID.4 EV to analyze capabilities and various applications of electric vehicle usage.  As part of this test, Volkswagen has modified a 2023 ID.4 AWD Pro S as a “Mobile Drone Response Vehicle” to equip TVA test drivers for a number of real-world response scenarios.

An eye-catching exterior graphics package was designed to boost visibility of the test fleet program. Featuring a trunk-housed custom storage unit for drone and field equipment, the vehicle is also outfitted with a portable power station. Versatility gets a boost by way of a Thule Caprock platform roof rack, supplemented with a Thule retractable side awning. Eighteen-inch wheels with H&R TRAK+ wheel spacers and 245/60R18 all-terrain tires unlock new roads for the SUV, while a heavy-duty suspension aids in hauling the weight of additional equipment. Roadside emergency lighting and side and rear-mounted floodlighting help responders when arriving on scene, while a full-display digital rearview mirror ensures optimal visibility for the vehicle’s operator. Additional Volkswagen Accessories on the concept include splash guards, a spare tire kit, dock & coat hanger, and Muddybuddy floor liners. The ID.4 EV Drone Command concept is shown with recovery boards and a fire extinguisher.

ID.4 Accessories Concept
Upping the ante on the ID.4 EV’s already  superb blend of performance, packaging and value, the ID.4 Accessories concept starts with a 2021 ID.4 1st Edition and adds versatile lifestyle elements. Outside, Volkswagen Accessories base carrier bars support a Thule Canyon Basket to haul gear and an Apex XT 9025XT hitch-mounted bike rack is ride ready. Splash guards protect the eighteen-inch wheels with H&R TRAK+ wheel spacers and 245/60R18 all-terrain tires. Inside, Volkswagen Accessories include the Full Display Mirror, rear seat cover, a spare tire kit, dock & coat hanger, roadside assistance and first aid kit, and Monster Mats® all-season floor mats.

GTI Accessories Concept
An homage to the Volkswagen enthusiast, this GTI concept reflects a blended approach to personalization. Based on a 2022 Volkswagen GTI SE with six-speed manual, the concept features Oettinger body styling components—front valence, rear valence and rear spoiler—as well as 20-inch gloss-black multi-spoke wheels wrapped in 245/30R20 high-performance tires. Braking is upgraded with the help of eight-piston calipers and 14.6-inch ventilated cross-drilled rotors in front. The vehicle also features a lowered stance using H&R Street Performance coilovers. Showing off the practical side of the sporty Golf platform is a color-matched roof box on base carrier bars. Additional curated items from Volkswagen Accessories include GTI dynamic center wheel caps, dynamic turn signals, black Bumperdillo rear bumper protection, enhanced rear view mirror with Homelink Connect®, Monster Mats all-season floor mats, heavy-duty trunk liner with CarGo blocks, and an emergency triangle.

Jetta GLI Performance Concept
A unique reimagining of the Jetta GLI by the Volkswagen Design Center California will be unveiled at the show on November 1st. More details to come.

2004 Golf R32
Twenty years ago, the Volkswagen Golf R32 took the world by storm. First released in Europe, the Mk4 Golf R32 was groundbreaking with its narrow-angle 3.2-liter VR6® engine putting out 240 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual and 4Motion® all-wheel drive. In 2004, a made-for-America version was produced, bringing just over 5,000 units of the one-of-a-kind performance hatchback stateside.

The two-door 2004 R32 featured a special three-grille front bumper, side skirts, rear hatch spoiler, and rear valance with special dual-exit rear muffler. It rode on 18-inch multi-spoke wheels, paired with 225/40R18 performance summer tires and 13.1-inch front and 10.1-inch rear ventilated disc brakes. It was available in just four colors: Black Magic, Deep Blue, Reflex Silver, and Tornado Red. The interior mirrored the performance nature of the elevated hot hatch. Sport seats with integrated head restraints and supportive high bolsters sat alongside a sport steering wheel and aluminum interior accents, with “R” logo placement throughout.

2022 Golf R
While the previous Golf R models were widely regarded as the best hot hatches you could buy, the Mk8 version is even better. The redesigned 2022 Golf R continued to evolve a legacy of understated performance first pioneered for the 2004 model year. Almost two decades later, the fifth iteration of Volkswagen’s performance halo ups the ante with new race-inspired content and premium features.

With 315hp, and up to 295 lb-ft of torque delivered by next-gen EA888 evo4 TSI® engine, the 2022 Golf R can be paired with either a six-speed manual or 7-speed DSG® transmission. The 2022 model year brought new vehicle dynamics settings and torque-vectoring AWD, along with advanced DCC® functionality and new driving modes to improve handling. The Golf R is fitted with 19-inch black machined aluminum-alloy wheels wrapped in 235/35 summer performance tires and features 14.1-inch front and 12.2-inch rear vented disc brakes. VW Accessories content on display includes R-specific MonsterMats all-season mats, a frameless rearview mirror with HomeLink Connect capability, and a Bumperdillo rear bumper protector.

Golf A59 Prototype
The 1993 Rallye Golf 3 A59 Prototype was created as a proof of concept to determine the feasibility of entering the 1994 FIA World Rally Championship, for which homologation regulations required that manufacturers create 2,500 street-legal versions. This prototype was developed with Schmidt Motorsport (SMS), and had it been put into production, it would have been the highest performance version of the third-generation Golf family. This specific car is the only complete version ever built. The engine and drivetrain was developed specifically for this concept, and although the Golf A59 did not go on to compete in races, the engine design went on to class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in different vehicles.

Volkswagen’s performance unicorn featured a bespoke 2.0-liter all-aluminum turbocharged four-cylinder engine, putting out 275 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drive with a variable center differential. The front strut-type suspension was modified with Bilstein® shock absorbers for longer travel, and the control arm width was increased by 3 inches. The fully-independent rear suspension was a multi-link design, with Bilstein struts, and retained the original factory chassis attachment points, supplemented with additional points. It rode on 16-inch five-spoke Speedline® SL817 motorsport wheels, with 225/45R16 tires, and braking was handled by a Brembo® system with cross-drilled brake discs.

Carbon fiber and Kevlar graced the exterior, which featured a modified front bumper with chin spoiler, additional air intakes in the custom grille and hood, widened front and rear fender arches, pronounced side skirts, a rear hatch spoiler, and a custom rear bumper with twin pipe muffler. Inside, RECARO® A8 sport seats with integrated head restraints and supportive high bolsters were met with a sport three-spoke steering wheel, and integral roll bar. A digital dashboard with engine monitoring selection sat in front of the driver, while additional engine and rally controls resided on the dashboard and inside the glovebox.

The many faces of Nissan Z

Just like all Nissan Z cars before it, the 2023 Nissan Z is an ideal platform for enthusiastic drivers to make the sports car their own and build on its already exhilarating personality with added performance.

Owners and fans of the 2023 Z will be especially intrigued by the NISMO Accessorized Z, which features a variety of new NISMO and Genuine Accessory components that will be available for the new Nissan Z. These components will appeal to drivers looking to personalize and customize the twin-turbocharged sports coupe. Read more details on the NISMO Accessorized Z concept.

For fans of all things drifting, Chris Forsberg’s 1,300-horsepower 2023 Formula Drift Z shows how the new Nissan Z can participate in the adrenaline-pumping world of Formula Drift. It builds on Forsberg Racing’s extensive experience developing high-powered and highly competitive drift cars. Read more details on the 2023 Formula Drift Z.

Finally, Nissan’s SEMA booth will host the public debut of the Nissan Z GT4, a purpose-built racing car that will hit circuits in 2023 to continue to defend the Z’s long heritage of motorsports successes. The Nissan Z GT4 – and further information about Nissan’s 2023 racing season plans – will be revealed at a special event taking place at the Nissan booth during SEMA, at 4 p.m. on Nov. 1.

NISMO Nissan Z & Frontier New Frontiers

Nissan enthusiasts have always been eager to tweak, tune and modify their vehicles, and now Nissan Z and Nissan Frontier owners interested in doing so will have plenty of factory-developed parts to choose from. At the 2022 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Nov. 1-4, Nissan will reveal a range of new NISMO performance-focused accessories for the Nissan Z and Frontier.

“Launching a new range of performance-oriented NISMO parts demonstrates our commitment to supporting enthusiasts, who have long been passionate about personalizing and modifying their Nissan vehicles,” said Kim Less, vice president, Aftersales, Nissan U.S. “Covering these parts with our Nissan warranty provides added peace of mind for our valued fans.”

If installed on a newly purchased vehicle, the parts will be covered by the standard Nissan new-vehicle warranty of 3 years/36,000 miles. Parts installed on the vehicle after purchase will receive the balance of the factory warranty or 12-month/12,000-mile coverage, whichever is higher. Parts installed on vehicles outside of the factory warranty period receive a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty.

The NISMO accessories, which will be available soon, will be displayed on two large parts walls at Nissan’s Thrill Street exhibit in the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall, booth #52141, as well as on two accessorized vehicles, a Nissan Z and a Frontier. Nissan Motorsports representatives will be on hand at the company’s booth to answer any questions visitors may have about the new parts.

For the Nissan Z, the components include new NISMO LM-RS1 forged wheels, a NISMO coilover suspension kit with a twin-tube design featuring a linear race spring system, rebound damping adjustability and ride height adjustment; a NISMO cold air intake; and a NISMO performance heat exchanger with increased volume to help reduce charge air temperatures and maintain performance on hot days and track events.

More Mopar for Jeep, Ram & Dogdge

Mopar is charging into this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas with three new head-turning concept vehicles and hundreds of quality-tested, factory-backed performance parts and accessories.

Inside the 15,345-square-foot exhibit in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center Show, Nov. 1-4, showgoers will experience the passion, creativity and innovation of Mopar – the iconic, 85-year-old performance brand.

“With a spotlight on electrification, Mopar is in a great position to fully enhance the customer experience with quality-tested, factory-backed parts and accessories,” said Mark Bosanac, North America senior vice president, Mopar service, parts and customer care. “The Jeep CJ Surge concept explores a future zero-emission propulsion system kit and supports the Jeep brand’s mission to become the leading electrified SUV brand in the world. Separately, our Ram 1500 Backcountry X and TRX Gold Shot concepts showcase a truckload of innovative Mopar accessories for our award-winning full-size trucks.”

Jeep CJ Surge Concept
Custom designed and engineered to explore an efficient battery-electric propulsion system for classic Jeep models, the Jeep CJ Surge electromod concept allows Mopar designers and engineers to gain a better understanding of potential battery-electric vehicle (BEV) parts kit applications, leading to a future propulsion-system offering for enthusiasts to build or convert classic and current cars and trucks into zero-emission vehicles.

A true Jeep 4×4, the CJ Surge concept is powered by a custom propulsion system. Under the hood, a scalable 400-volt, 200-kW Electric Drive Module mounts to the frame with custom-designed solid motor mounts. Power to all four wheels is supplied by 24 lithium-ion battery modules and torque runs through a two-speed Jeep transfer case with selectable gearing. Battery modules are enclosed in a custom shell mounted in the rear of the passenger cabin.

Riding high on 35-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires paired with a 2-inch lift kit, the stunning Copper Canyon body stands out with gloss black and Surf Blue Surge graphics and bodyside striping. The concept hood and bezel are painted gloss black, along with the iconic seven-slot Jeep grille.

The CJ Surge concept rolls on matte black 18-by-9-inch Black Rhino Solid wheels that carry Surf Blue accents on the rim beads and ride below the oversized concept fender flares. Front and rear Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) Dana 44 Crate axles help the CJ Surge concept easily crawl over rocks and boulders.

A JPP Wrangler JK Rubicon Bumper Kit carries a JPP Rubicon Warn winch up front and is flanked on both sides by Surf Blue tow hooks and amber LED fog lamps. Underbody protection is provided by JPP Rubicon skid and front-bumper plates and concept JPP rock rails. A custom BEV charge port is located just behind the driver-side door opening.

Looking out from the 2-inch cropped windshield, the driver and passenger are perched in custom seats installed with concept seat risers. Both seats feature Surf Blue stitching on the black Sedoso cloth and houndstooth fabric inserts.

A Wrangler JK center console features a rotary shifter knob, while Mopar instrument-panel gauges include a charge indicator to let the driver know how much battery life remains.

The cockpit of the CJ Surge concept is surrounded by a custom-built roll cage, while a custom-shaped bikini top offers valuable shade and cover from the elements. No JPP concept would be complete without a set of Mopar all-weather floor mats.

To cap off the interior touches, the custom steering wheel is adorned by a unique JPP horn pad badge.

Ram 1500 TRX Gold Shot Concept
The eye-catching Ram 1500 TRX Gold Shot concept transforms the apex predator of the production truck world into a custom high-performance toy hauler for the motocross enthusiast.

Built upon the 702-horsepower Ram 1500 TRX – the quickest, fastest and most powerful pickup truck in the world – the Satin Bitter Yellow/Satin Black concept carries massive TRX side graphics and brings the proven high-speed capability and durability to arrive at the off-road trails in record time.

Custom-designed, Vintage Bronze 18-by-9.5-inch Black Rhino Chamber wheels ride on 37-inch BFGoodrich tires for a performance-inspired appearance at all four corners. Providing easy access to a pair of motorcycles in the truck bed is a Mopar bed step that lowers for easy access and, with a gentle push, retracts to a stored, out-of-the way position.

Behind the cab, a RamBar accessory bar features a pair of concept 14-inch TYRI rectangular LED lights, generating 4,300 lumens of exceptionally bright light. The truck-bed surface is protected by a black, Mopar spray-in textured bedliner.

Protecting the front and rear underside areas of the TRX Gold Shot concept are custom metal skid plates that feature laser-etched Mopar lettering. Use of the front skid plate helps to increase the approach angle by 2.3 degrees up to 32.5 degrees. Mopar rock rails also help protect the side sills from any damage.

Just below the rear bumper, a pair of 5-inch black Mopar exhaust tips provide a sporty, finished appearance.

The premium interior of the TRX Gold Shot concept comes straight from the award-winning Ram 1500 TRX production model with center stack, instrument cluster, flat-bottom steering wheel with prominent paddle shifters and center-console-mounted floor shifter.

Alaska Gold stitching and accents throughout the interior cabin match the striking exterior look.

Aggressive sport seats are premium wrapped with Capri leather and perforated Alcantara suede inner bolsters. Gold Spinneybeck leather chaser stripes provide a bold use of exterior-matching contrast color to the black front and rear seats. Both front seats feature embroidered TRX logos on the upper back panels and Mopar logos on the outboard shoulder bolster.

A vinyl floor from the Ram 1500 Tradesman model allows for quick and easy interior cleaning.

Ram 1500 Backcountry X Concept
For the truck owner who is serious about combining work and play, the Ram 1500 Backcountry X concept builds upon the class-exclusive RamBox cargo management system with custom-designed RamPack and RamRack features that significantly increase the secure storage space without compromising the functionality of the pickup bed.

Designed for sleek and integrated fit on both sides of the truck bed, the conceptual RamPack storage compartments – located above the standard RamBox on each bed side – open via a single, carbon-fiber, hatch-type panel. Valuable storage space is expanded by more than 68% (up to 12.3 cubic feet) with the custom RamPack system. Custom rectangular shelves run the full length of the vast compartments and a pair of tie-down loops provide secure mounting locations. Mopar RamBox vertical bin dividers also help to keep stored gear organized.

The custom RamRack on the Ram 1500 Backcountry X continues the design investigation of the telescoping storage-rack system first shown on the Ram 1500
Outdoorsman concept at the 2021 SEMA Show. The RamRack uses additional Thule cross rails above the bed for mounting gear and accessories. Attached in each corner of the RamRack are 2-inch TYRI LED lights, while a Center High Mount Stop Light adds a third brake light to the rear crossbar.

On the inside panel of the tailgate, a custom Mopar RamGate task-bench insert features various conversion charts and an angle finder coupled with an array of Rockler woodworking hardware. A durable Mopar spray-in bedliner protects the floor of the truck bed.

The Ram 1500 Backcountry X concept rides on a Mopar 2-inch lift kit with FOX shocks, matte-black 20-by-9-inch Fuel Heater wheels and 37-inch BFGoodrich tires. The two-tone Matte Iced Silver Titanium and matte-black exterior stands out with contrasting anodized orange bodyside stripes and accents on the hood, tow hooks (front and rear) and grille badge.

Up front, a Mopar tubular grille guard has four Mopar 5-inch LED off-road lights to provide significantly enhanced forward lighting.

Black-painted Mopar tube steps, located on both side rails, provide easy entry and exit from the elevated cabin. A Mopar rear bed step uses an articulating arm that lowers down for easy access to the truck bed and retracts back to a stored position.

Inside, tone-on-tone neutral green front and second-row bucket seats feature contrasting orange accent stitching that carries throughout the cabin on the steering wheel, door panels and armrests. Contrasting anodized orange air vent controls also provide a custom look and feel.

Front bucket seats wear custom embroidered Backcountry X and Mopar logos. Between the front seats, a custom, deployable work surface with an integrated measuring system slides out from the soft center armrest and provides 12 by 14 inches of additional workspace.

Unique interior A-pillar handles and exterior C-pillar handles are wrapped with a stylish black Gode-Tex vinyl.

Floor protection is provided by Mopar all-weather mats, while under the second-row bench seat, a concept RamVac on-board vacuum makes cleaning the cabin area easy after coming back from the trail or the worksite.

SendCutSend Streamlines Streamliner

Nevada-based rapid manufacturing company, SendCutSend, will unveil a custom, turbine-electric powered streamliner at this year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nev.

“Jet-A-Send” was developed by SendCutSend’s R&D team to demonstrate on-demand manufacturing services and technology. The turbine-electric powered streamliner is constructed entirely of materials, processes, and services available to the public via SendCutSend.com.

With about 190 hours in design and only 28 hours in assembly, the vehicle features a laser-cut stainless steel body and aluminum chassis which uses high-precision CNC bending, tapping, and countersinking. It also demonstrates the ease of use and efficiency of SendCutSend’s rapid manufacturing model. The finishes on Jet-A-Send feature clear, red, and black anodizing; yellow and black zinc plating; and various raw materials including carbon fiber.

A 10hp JetCat Turboshaft provides electrical power to onboard lithium batteries, which in turn power the three-phase, 25kW AC motor by Electro & Company. The turbine-electric motor gets 300 miles per gallon (Jet A, Kerosene, or Bacardi 151). Jet-A-Send weighs in at roughly 388 pounds without a driver.

SendCutSend was launched in 2018 by Jim Belosic out of a need for access to manufacturing, quickly and affordably. The nationally recognized company has continued to innovate with a proprietary app, Parts Builder, and instant quotes. Now offering more than 250 materials and thicknesses and post-processing services including anodizing, bending, countersinking, powder coating, plating, tapping, and deburring, everyone from students to Fortune 500 companies now have access to high-tech manufacturing equipment at an affordable price.

Ride with Us Moto Intro Program at SEMA

Attendees of the world’s leading automotive trade show can get their very first experience riding a motorcycle through the Ride With Us Moto Intro program, which is headed to the SEMA Show, Nov. 1-4, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“If you’ve ever wondered how fun it may be to ride a motorcycle, this is the best way to try it,” said Cinnamon Kernes, who leads the Motorcycle Industry Council’s Ride With Us program. “We provide the safety gear, the motorcycles, and the coaches. All you need to bring are the smiles.”

“Many SEMA Show exhibitors manufacture products for motorcycles, so it’s great to have the Motorcycle Industry Council be a part of the Show,” said Tom Gattuso, SEMA vice president of events. “The Ride With Us Moto Intro program is a great interactive feature anchoring the West Hall area.”

Ride With Us has traveled across the country, providing first-ride experiences to hundreds of participants, ages 16 and up. Motorcycle Safety Foundation-certified coaches help riders get geared up, then guide them on a motorcycle, at their own pace.

“We know a lot of people want to try motorcycling, but it can be hard to get the proper gear, then find someone to loan you a bike and show you the proper way to ride,” said Kernes, vice president of market expansion at the MIC. “And some people aren’t ready to commit an entire weekend to a licensing class. But this experience only takes about 30 minutes, from gearing up to gearing down, so it’s the perfect way to see if it’s something you want to pursue.”

There is no cost for SEMA and AAPEX attendees, and Ride With Us is also free to the public who have SEMA Ignited Friday Experience tickets.

The new functionality presents ADAS calibration requirements including targets and part numbers on-screen in the diagnostic tool, enables the shop to immediately perform the necessary calibrations using the DriveSafe tool’s proprietary capability and then can upload the results into the CCC® work file for the vehicle. Finally, an on-screen diagnostic tool checklist also provides guidance and documentation that critical calibrations are completed before the post-scan runs. There are currently seven patents pending on the innovations contained in QuickADAS™, further cementing the status of Opus IVS as the undisputed pioneer in ADAS and Remote Services.

Two years ago, Opus IVS disrupted the collision industry with QuickScan™, a simple and automated diagnostic scan that gave comprehensive results through a simplified and integrated user experience. QuickADAS™ takes the next step forward by progressing from scanning to full ADAS calibrations. “This new capability came as a direct request of a major customer. Having our own diagnostics on tool enabled us to bring yet another first to the industry: an ADAS Checklist with target needs identified, the ability to perform the calibration, documentation required for post-scanning and invoicing, all fully integrated into the work file of the vehicle,” said Brian Herron, CEO of Opus IVS. “This new capability will enable shops to cut up to 50% off of their costs of vehicle calibration,” added Herron.
