NHTSA Recalls Hyundai Nexos & Sonatas Over Autonomous Parking Feature

Hyundai Engineering Teams Attempt Land Speed Records with NEXO Fuel Cell SUV and Sonata Hybrid for 2019 SEMA Show

NHTSA has recalled Hyundai Nexo and Sonata vehicles with Remote Parking Assist over a software glitch in which the cars won’t stop if the software malfunctions. The recall will begin on June 4th and will have dealers reprogram RSPA for free.

The feature premiered during the Super Bowl ads called “Smaht Park.”

In a letter to Hyundai NHTSA reports:

Makes/Models/Model Years: HYUNDAI/NEXO/2020 HYUNDAI/SONATA/2020

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: SOFTWARE

Potential Number of Units Affected: 11,870

Problem Description:

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020 Nexo and Sonata vehicles.  The Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) software may fail to prevent vehicle movement upon detection of an RSPA system malfunction.

Consequence:

Unintended vehicle movement increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy:

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the RSPA software, free of charge.  The recall is expected to begin June 4, 2020.  Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.  Hyundai’s number for this recall is 191.
