Google Self-Drives 2 Million Miles
Google announced that its self-driving cars have driven over two million miles. In post the head of Google’s self-driving unit, Dimitri Dolgov wrote that Google’s cars have dealt with horseback rider in the middle of the road, to a man wielding a chainsaw in the street to a couple riding unicycles side-by-side. He states Google’s cars can confidently handle unusual situations like seeing a car (or three!) driving the wrong way down a road.
Uber’s Self-Driving Dents
Meanwhile, back in Pittsburgh, Uber’s self-driving Ford Fusions have been running into a few problems, including being seen going down a one-way street in the wrong directions. There are also reports of Uber self-driving cars stuck in the road being helps by other Ubers. An Uber vehicle was side swiped, while Uber claims it doesn’t know it the car was in autonomous mode during the collision.
Renesas News
Renesas Electronics Corporation announced the global availability of its expansive lineup of V2X solutions that will help accelerate the arrival of autonomous driving. The solutions include two system-on-chips (SoCs) that will ease the development process for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication systems. One of the solutions includes the R-Car W1R 760 megahertz (MHz) band wireless SoC for the Japanese market, and the new R-Car W2H SoC that features a high-performance security engine that is indispensable for V2X systems designed for the Japanese, U.S., and European markets. The other solution consists of the W2H SoC combined with the R-Car W2R 5.9 GHz band wireless communication SoC developed for U.S. and European markets.
By combining these new SoCs, system developers can now easily develop systems that support the corresponding V2X standard for the Japanese, U.S., and European markets. Renesas also delivers development starter kits that will enable system developers to immediately start application software development, leading to significant reductions in the development period for V2X systems.
Renesas & Cohda Wireless
Renesas Electronics Corporation also announced collaboration with Cohda Wireless.. By bringing together Renesas’ V2X R-Car system-on-chips (SoCs) and Cohda Wireless’ V2X and CAV software solutions, the companies deliver a V2X reference solution that supports European and North American communications standards for V2X system development.
Cohda Wireless will demonstrate the jointly-developed V2X reference solution consisting of Renesas’ R-Car W2R and R-Car W2H SoCs combined as a starter kit and Cohda Wireless’ software at the ITS World Congress 2016 taking place October 10 -14 in Melbourne/Australia.
Autotalks & Cohda Wireless
Autotalks, a leading supplier of automotive-grade V2X communication processors and RF transceivers, and Cohda Wireless, the market leader of V2X – Vehicle-to-Vehicle, Vehicle-to-Infrastructure, and CAV – Connected Autonomous Vehicles software solution, announcedtheir partnership at ITS World Congress 2016 in Melbourne.
Cohda Wireless will demonstrate the V2X reference system consisting of the Autotalks PANGAEA platform and Cohda Wireless’ leading V2X software.
The demo showcases interoperability between the Cohda MK5 platform and the Autotalks PANGAEA platform on a variety of safety applications. An in-car live demonstration is also available for experience at Albert Park.
Skype Update for iOS 10 & CarPlay
Microsoft updated Skype 6.25 for iPhone and iPad. This update takes the best new features of iOS 10 with Siri contact intergration and CarPlay. Skype takes advantage of CallKit within iOS 10, incoming Skype calls will now show up just like regular calls.
NI ADAS Testing
NI , the provider of platform-based systems that enable engineers and scientists to solve the world’s greatest engineering challenges, announced today a technology demonstration of a new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Test Solution at European Microwave Week (EuMW) 2016. The ADAS Test Solution is designed for short- and long-range radar in the 76–81 GHz range, and is based on NI’s mmWave front end technology and the recently released PXIe-5840 second-generation vector signal transceiver (VST).
MEMA Joins Auto-ISAC
The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), the leading international trade association representing vehicle suppliers that manufacture and remanufacture components and systems for use in passenger cars and heavy trucks, is now a strategic partner of the Automotive Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Auto-ISAC). The Auto-ISAC is a non-profit trade association that facilitates the trusted sharing of cybersecurity information and leads the development of vehicle cybersecurity best practices for the automotive industry.
Schaffler Partners with IBM
The global automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler has chosen IBM as its strategic partner for its digital transformation. IBM will act as the technology provider, consultant and development partner for a digital ecosystem to support Schaeffler in the integration of its mechatronic components, systems and machines into the rapidly expanding world of the “Internet of Things” (IoT), as well as implementing market ready new business models based on digital services. As a first milestone the two companies have built a digital platform for all of Schaeffler’s added-value digital services from October this year.
Faurecia Opens Factory in Columbus, Indiana
Faurecia, a leading automotive supplier opened a $64 million state-of-the-art, data-driven manufacturing facility in Columbus, Indiana. Columbus South, a 400,000 square-foot facility, will employ 450 people and produce a new, high-tech emissions control product for the commercial vehicle industry.

Continental Buys Hoosier Racing Tire
The Continental Corporation continues to expand its leading technology expertise with targeted acquisitions as announced. The international automotive supplier, tire manufacturer and industrial partner has acquired the tire specialist Hoosier Racing Tire (Lakeville, Indiana, USA), as well as a majority stake in Zonar Systems Inc. (Seattle, Washington, USA), a company specializing in fleet management solutions. It was agreed in both cases that the purchase price would not be disclosed.
Mentor Graphics
Mentor Graphics Corporation, Northwest Logic and Krivi Semiconductor announced the availability of a complete DDR4 SDRAM IP design and verification solution that enables ASIC and FPGA design teams to quickly design and verify DDR4 memory subsystems in the Mentor Graphics IP Partnership Program.
