There is good news for 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2015/16 Azera and 2016 Veloster owners with navigation systems. Android Auto and CarPlay updates are coming in the end of July according to VIN checks at the Hyundai Android Auto and CarPlay check microsite.

In the end of May, Hyundai released a free do-it-yourself updates for compatible Hyundai model cars to upgrade to CarPlay and/or Android Auto through its website for  2015-16 Sonata Navigation, 2015-6 Genesis with Navigation or 2016 Tucson, 2016 Elantra GT with Navigation, 2017 Santa Fe with Navigation, 2017 Santa Fe Sport (7″) and Santa Fe Sport with Navigation.

The company stated in a news release that “Updates for CarPlay and Android Auto 2016 model-year Sonata Hybrid, Sonata Plug-In Hybrid, Veloster and Azera with Navigation will be announced at a later date.”

Hyundai owners who have been anxiously awaiting the update to Android Auto and CarPlay can put their VIN number into the Hyundai VIN validation web portal to find out the date of the update.

We have confirmed through VIN number from readers and our with own specific models which some have been change to beginning of August:

  • 2015/2016 Hyundai Azera with Navigation is eligible for an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto update.  This update will be made available via the Hyundai owner website (www.myhyundai.com) by the end of July 2016  by early August 2016.
  • 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is s eligible for an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto update.  This update will be made available by the end of July 2016  by early August 2016.
  • 2016 Hyundai Veloster is eligible for an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto update.  This update will be made available early August 2016.
  • 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid is eligible for an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto update.  This update will be made available by the end of July 2016 early August 2016.

The web portal also validates which Hyundai models that are currently available for an update to Android Auto and CarPlay.

The do-it-yourself update is free but does require some work. You need either a USB drive or the SD card that has the mapping software for your Hyundai vehicle.

Models with the DIY update currently availalbe for the CarPlay only update are the 2015 Sonata with navigation, the 2016 Sonata with navigation, the 2016 Sonata with 7-inch touchscreen and  the 2017 Santa Fe/Spor (with navigation or 7″ screen.

Models that get both Android Auto in CarPlay are the 2015 Genesis with an 8-inch touchscreen navigation and the 2016 Genesis with 8-inch touchscreen navigation, the 2016 Elantra GT with navigation as well as the 2016 Tucson with navigation. Note Hyundai Genesis with 9″ screen is not compatible.

To update the software, you’ll need your VIN number USB Drive (USB 2 or lower) with at least 5GB of space or the SD card from the Navigation system. If you don’t have an SD card reader on your computer, you’ll need a USB card reader with an SD Card port.

If you need more detailed instructions, read the original article with text, you can print out the text or read it on your computer while you complete the process. There are also installation videos available.

At Google I/O it was announced Android Auto will be coming as a standalone product without cars on smartphone and Waze app will be added. Read Android Auto Tips & Tricks or Android Auto Review. Read CarPlay Tips & Trick or great questions to ask.

CarPlay requires an iPhone with a lightning connector and iOS 7 or higher. Android requires and Android phone with Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher, a Bluetooth connection and the cable that came with the phone. If you ask Siri while connected to CarPlay, “What can Siri do?” She replies “You can ask me to get directions find businesses, make phone calls play music and check or send texts and emails. I can show you lots more when you’re not driving.”

Android Auto brings Android into the car for music, messaging Google Maps, calendar integration and phone functions using the touchscreen or the Ok Google through the voice button.

Thank you to our reader Anthony B. for alerting us to the information. Many Hyundai owners will be glad to have their head units updated to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. If you have any other pertinent information, please post it in the comments below.

  1. So what will become of my 2015 Sonata Hybrid LTD? The Bluetooth has gotten much worse, and the dealer is clueless to fix it. Spent a lot on this car, second Hyundai, hoping for a better experience.

  2. If you’re in Canada you are out of luck. Here’s the reply I got from Hyundai Canada when asking about the release date for my 2016 Sonata Hybrid Ultimate which has always been advertised as having both Android Auto and Apple Carplay coming soon:

Thank you for taking the time to contact our office and provide us with your feedback.

We are sorry to inform you that Android Auto will not be available for the 2016 Sonata through Hyundai Auto Canada. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We understand how upsetting this is. Android Auto is a feature that, at this time, is only available for the 2017 Elantra (sedan only), the 2017 Sonata (excluding hybrid and plug-in hybrid) and the 2017 Santa Fe (Sport and XL). Unfortunately, there will be no retrofitting of the model year 2016 (or prior) Hyundai vehicles in Canada.

Regrettably, Apple CarPlay has not yet been launched through Hyundai Auto Canada, however is currently in development. There is no timeline for launch and there will also not be any retrofitting of model year 2016 (or prior) Hyundai vehicles in Canada.

At this time, Hyundai Canada’s third party software provider, MnSOFT, has made Android Auto and AppleCarplay available for customers who purchase their map update for certain 2016-2017 Elantra GT and Tucson vehicles in Canada. Perhaps in the future they will decide to make the feature available for the 2016 Sonata. The development and deployment of navigation software used by Hyundai vehicles is solely the responsibility of MnSOFT.

We sincerely apologize for the frustration that this will no doubt cause and we truly appreciate your understanding in the matter.

Do not hesitate to contact us with any other questions you may have.

    All the best,

    Mariah.

  3. All good news for new HYUNDAI models, what about my 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid LTD,any chance for the Android Auto?
