Kia announced that free Apple CarPlayand Android Auto software updates will be available for eligible vehicles when equipped with a compatible navigation system (AVN 4.0) or UVO3 by the end of July.
The following vehicles are eligible for the software update:
- Kia Forte 2017 Model Year.
- Kia Optima 2015-16 Model Years.
- Kia Optima Hybrid 2015-16 Model Years.
- Kia Sedona 2015-16 Model Years.
- Kia Soul 2014-16 Model Years.
- Kia Soul EV 2015-16 Model Years.
- Kia Sorento 2016 Model Year.
- Kia Sportage 2017.
With these types of updates the car owner needs a USB drive and computer to download the software. Then the software is update uploaded into the vehicle. It can take hours to accomplish therefore it is a good idea to not need the car for while when you decide to install the update.
Customers will be notified by the end of July via email to go to myuvo.com for vehicle eligibility and step-by-step instructions on updating their vehicle with the latest downloadable software. All owners of new and pre-owned vehicles must register at myuvo.com to receive email notifications that the software is available for download.
UVO support is available by calling 1-800-333-4KIA (4542). There may be charge to the dealer to install the update.
CarPlay gives drivers the ability to access the device’s seamless user interface through Kia’s UVO infotainment system. By connecting the iPhone into the USB port, users are able to make phone calls, access music, send and receive messages, get directions optimized for traffic conditions and more while staying focused on the road. CarPlay also features hands-free support via Siri voice control or the vehicle’s controls and touchscreen.
Current CarPlay apps listed include Podcasts, Beats Music, iHeart Radio, At Bat, Spotify, Stitcher, CBS Radio, Rdio and Audiobooks.com. Apple Maps gives turn-by-turn directions, traffic conditions and estimated travel times. It suggests address from your contacts and calendars.
UVO is very similar to the system on Hyundai’s compatible CarPlay models, including the new Hyundai Elantra Eco.
Android Auto brings Android into the car for music, messaging Google Maps, calendar integration and phone functions using the touchscreen or the Ok Google through the voice button.
According to an Autotrader study, Android and Auto and CarPlay are recognized as being worthwhile.
Meanwhile some Hyundai model owners are still waiting for Android Auto and CarPlay updates while others received their updates already.
Kia Motors announced that the 2017 Sportage and 2016 Optima, when equipped with a compatible navigation system or UVO 3 (found currently on the Sportage) will be offered with Apple CarPlay when the Kia retailers receive delivery during the second quarter.
The 2017 Sorento was the first Kia vehicle to be offered with CarPlay support.
