Chevrolet unveiled the all-new 2016 Volt electric car with and extended range and 50 miles of EV range. It offers greater efficiency and acceleration as well as a sportier design.
The two-motor drive unit is up to 12 percent more efficient and lighter. Battery capacity has increased and weight reduced. The Regen on Demand feature enables driver control of energy regeneration via a paddle on the back of the steering wheel. The body is stronger for a quieter ride. Charging can be based on location. Even the cord and the plug are are more compact and easier to use.
The 2016 Volt has a stronger more muscular body including active grille shutters, help balance design with efficiency.Inside, the new Volt includes seating for five.
Fewer icons on the center dash make it easier to operate. Separate climate control knobs and buttons below the center display offer clear, convenient operation.
The 2016 Volt will uses an 18.4 kWh battery system with new LG Chem chemistry. The number of battery cells have decreased from 288 to 192 and are lighter. The cells are placed lower for a better center of gravity.
Location charging lets the owners program 120V charging level (eight Lamps or 12 amps) and times/places to charge for the best utility rates.
The new Chevrolet Volt safety features are.
- Standard rear-vision camera.
- Ten standard air bags, including driver and front-passenger knee air bags
- Available active safety features offering lane keep assist with lane departure warning, side blind zone alert with lane change alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert with following distance indicator, front automatic braking, and advanced park assist with front and rear park assist (semi-automatic parallel parking).
GM produces the 2016 Chevy Volt at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant and at batteries at the Brownstown, (Mich.) Battery Assembly Plant.
It is expected to go on sale the second half of 2015.
