Volvo’s Drive Me Driving Itself in Gothenburg & NYC

volvotestdriveGoogle isn’t the only company with self-driving cars.  Volvo’s “Drive Me’ program has 100 self-driving Volvos on public roads in every day normal driving situations

The first test cars are already rolling around the Swedish city of Gothenburg and the Autopilot technology is performing well.

The test cars can follow in-lanes, adapt spped and merge into traffic by themselves. Eventually the autonomous Volvos will be able to drive the whole test route in highly autonomous mode.

The Drive Me program involves: legislators, transport authorities, city government the car maker and real customers. It is a joint initiative between Volvo Car Group, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, Lindholmen Science Park and the City of Gothenburg. The Swedish Government is also endorsing the project.

The human drivers will offer insight into the social aspects of the project.

Autopilot, enables the driver to hand over the driving to the Volvo which takes care of all driving functions.

An autonomous drive car was also shown in the U.S. at the New York International Auto Show this month.

Other companies working on autonmous self-driving, robotic cars are Ford , Mercedes- Benz and Audi.  Read what will win the race for the auto-driven car.
