Audi, GM, Google, Honda, Hyundai and NVIDIA have joined together to form the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA),to deploy the Android platform to cars starting in 2014.
Before the launch of the Android operating system, Google formed a similar alliance with smartphone makers throughout the world.
The OAA claims their method is based on openness, customization and scale. This open development model and common platform will allow automakers to deploy new technology and software for drivers, and create new opportunities for app developers.
OAA members share a vision for the connected car, and bringing these open standards of innovation to the market will help extend people’s mobile experience seamlessly from Android over to cars.
Timing from each automaker will vary however the first cars with Android integration will be out by the end of this year.
The OAA invited other automotive technology companies to join in this endeavor.
The OAA did not state how and if these cars will be compatible with iPhones that are a major part of the United States market.
The name sounds like a mash up of an overeaters twelve step group and an auto towing service.
